Chapter 1.4-Miraculous Claims and the Critical Mind (Can Intelligent People Still Believe in Miracles) Point 4

Chapter 1-Obection #4 to the Assumption of Naturalism-The Experience of the Supernatural Today

Many scholars in America reject the idea of miracles and thus the story of Jesus because they have never seen an event that is considered supernatural. But if you consider the experiences of people in other parts of the world now and in the past, you would find numerous accounts of events that can't be explained by science. Bodies levitating, objects flying through the air on their own, demon possession, encounters with angels and unexplained healings and other "coincidences" are all reported by eyewitnesses in many countries.

It seems like those who reject miracles are actually using circular reasoning. They assume miracles don't happen, then reject any reports of supernatural events and conclude that the world always operates by natural laws which excludes the possibility of miracles. This faulty logic is then spread in our educational system and news media until average people in our country think it is odd to consider the possibility of miracles really happening.

Of course there will always be false reports of miracles, but we need to be careful to be objective and open minded and take into account experiences of people throughout the world that we live in. We should not base our views on just what we know or are told in our modern western culture.
