Chapter 1.2-Miraculous Claims and the Critical Mind (Can Intelligent People Still Believe in Miracles) Point 2

Chapter 1-Obection #2 to the Assumption of Naturalism-Laws of Nature

People reject the story of a miracle working Jesus because they believe that all events must be explained by the "laws of nature". Using the term "laws of nature" implies that there are rules that nature must follow, so miracles are impossible. But these "law" are only descriptions of what scientists have observed to be generally true, not guidelines for what we must find to be true.

Recently scientists studying quantum physics have learned that subatomic particles behave in a random unpredictable way. If all the particles in your chair happened to behave in their most improbable way at the same time the chair could disintegrate. Fortunately, they probably won't do that. But this does show us that "laws of nature" are only descriptions of the most likely probabilities and should not be used to assume that unusual events such as miracles are simply impossible.
